View Posts and Sort By Author in Blackboard 7: Brief Tutorial

February 26, 2008

We just recently moved over to Blackboard 7 from Blackboard 6. One of the major changes between the two versions is the layout of the Discussion Boards.  In Blackboard 6, all the threads and posts were viewed in one long listing on one webpage. In Blackboard 7, the Discussion Boards are organized and grouped into threads on one web page. Then, you need to click on the thread link to view all the posts related to that thread, taking you to a new page, with all the posts just for that thread. Some people liked this new organization. It provided a cleaner interface, but some people liked the option of seeing everything all at once, then searching by author, date, etc. Here’s a way you can view posts and sort by authors in Blackboard 7.

1. Log into Bb. Click on Discussion Board

2. Click on the forum you want to view

3. At the bottom left, click the Go button next to “Select All”

4. With all the treads checked, click on the Collect button at the top.

5. At the top right, you can sort by author. Choose Author in the drop down and click on the Go button.

Overlapping or Smashed Text In Firefox 2.0 in Mac OS X Tiger: A Quick Fix

February 15, 2008

I recently had a funky thing happen to my Firefox (I am running FF 2.0 and Mac OS X Tiger). I would visit webpages and the text would be smashed and overlapping. I couldn’t read certain words and highlighting text to copy was a pain. I turned off the CSS in the browser. The text looked fine. I then started Firefox in safe mode (no add -ons running). I still had overlapping text. I found a blog that had the solution posted for my overlapping text issue (http://www.pixelitdigital.com/?p=45). The issue was having duplicate fonts on different parts of my computer. Here is a run down of how I cleaned up my fonts and fixed the overlapping and smashed text issue:

1. Go to Applications—> Font Book. Font Book

2. In Font Book, click on All Fonts (under collection)All Fonts.

3. Click and select all the fonts that have a dot next to them.

Highlight Fonts

4. In the menu bar, select Edit, then click on Resolve Duplicates.

Resolve Dups

(The author in the article above indicates you might need find the duplicate and remove the font by hand, but I did not have to).

Restart Firefox and type away without overlapping text. Enjoy!

Note: If these set of directions do not solve the issue, then go into the Firefox preferences, choose the Content tab, and change your Default to something like Tahoma.

Embedding an Excel Spreadsheet in a Word Doc: Brief Tutorial

February 11, 2008

A co-worker today had a question about embedding an Excel spreadsheet into a Word document file. I looked into it and came up with these steps. The following steps will embed the spreadsheet into the Word document, plus anytime you update the spreadsheet, those changes will be reflected in the Word doc. Here’s the steps:

  1. Open the Excel spreadsheet
  2. Select the cells you want to be embedded
  3. Click the Copy button
  4. Switch to the Word document
  5. Click the insertion point on the Word doc where you want the spreadsheet to be
  6. Click Edit, Paste Special.
  7. Select Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object.
  8. On the left hand side of the Paste Special box, choose the Paste Link radio button (make sure your Excel Spreadsheet is closed at this time)
  9. Click Ok.

What is Second Life?

February 7, 2008

Second Life is an Internet-based virtual world which was launched in 2003. It was developed by Linden Research, Inc. The goal of Linden Research, Inc is to create a world like the Metaverse described by Stephenson, a user-defined world in which people can interact, play, do business, and otherwise communicate.

The clients of Second Life program are called Residents. Second Life provides an advanced level of a social network service combined with general aspects of a metaverse. Residents can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade items and services from one another. Second Life’s virtual currency is the Linden Dollar and it can be exchanged for real world currencies. Now more than 20 million accounts have been registered.

Sometimes Second Life just likes an online game but actually it is not. It does not have points, scores, winners or losers, levels, or most of the other characteristics of games.
